HAIR RESTORATION FOR WOMEN
The parting that keeps widening. More scalp showing in ponytail photographs. A hairline you now plan styles around rather than with.
Most women researching a female hair transplant weigh three questions. Will it look natural? Am I actually a good candidate? And who will be holding the instruments on the day? Dr Epameinondas Bonaros plans and performs every stage of every procedure himself, at his Glasgow clinic on Clyde Street. Patients come from across Scotland and the UK.
Book a consultation, and you meet the surgeon, not a salesperson.
The basics
A female hair transplant uses follicular unit excision (FUE) to move individual hair follicles from a donor area. The donor is usually the back and sides of the head. Grafts are placed into areas that have thinned: the hairline, temples, parting or crown. It is carried out under local anaesthetic, with no strip of scalp removed and no stitches. Older strip surgery leaves a linear scar. FUE leaves tiny dot marks instead. That is not the same as scarless, and we would rather tell you plainly: in most women, the dots sit hidden beneath the surrounding hair.
Results tend to last because transplanted follicles retain their resistance to the hormonal signal that underlies pattern loss. However, no clinic can honestly promise a fixed density or graft survival figure. Good candidates have a stable pattern of loss and a healthy donor area. That applies across all hair types, including curly and Afro-textured hair, and to trans women seeking softer framing. If shedding is still diffuse, changing or undiagnosed, surgery should wait, and Dr Bonaros will say so.
OUR APPROACH
Female hairlines fail when they look drawn on. Dr Bonaros designs a soft, slightly irregular line matched to your face and age. He places only single-hair grafts along its leading edge and sets each incision to the angle, depth, and direction of the surrounding hair. New growth then blends into what you already have. He then performs every stage himself, from extraction to final placement: the person who plans your result is the person who builds it.
Diffuse thinning can involve the donor area, too. So he first maps your scalp with a digital trichoscope, a magnified scalp camera, and only harvests what a stable donor can safely give. Your quote covers the grafts your plan needs, not the most that can be billed, and when surgery is not yet right, he tells you.
WHY WOMEN CHOOSE FUE
Local anaesthetic, no stitches and no linear scar, and you go home the same day. Unshaven and partial-shave FUE options mean longer hair can cover the treated areas while they heal.
Many patients return to desk-based work within a few days. The small dot scabs usually clear within 10 to 14 days, and light exercise can typically resume after two weeks.
Relocated follicles usually keep growing for the long term, and each graft is placed individually to follow the angle and curl of your existing hair. Individual results vary.
Your surgery is never delegated to technicians. Your follow-up reviews are conducted in person with Dr Bonaros at the Glasgow clinic, rather than via a call centre.
THE PROCEDURE
Your consultation starts with a scalp examination using a digital trichoscope. Some causes need investigation first, such as thyroid disease, iron deficiency, or hormonal changes. If so, you are guided to the right testing through your GP. If a transplant is suitable, your hairline is drawn with you. You receive a realistic graft estimate, then a fixed written quote setting out exactly what it includes. Follow the preparation guidance you are given, and never stop prescribed medicines without your prescriber's advice.
1. Your design has been confirmed and photographed, and the donor area has been trimmed as agreed. A full shave is often unnecessary.
2. Local anaesthetic is placed: a brief sting, then numbness. You stay awake, with breaks, and most patients remain comfortable.
3. Dr Bonaros extracts follicular units using a fine FUE punch and checks grafts under magnification.
4. He creates each recipient site and places every graft to match the direction of your existing hair.
5. You get a full aftercare walk-through, then go home the same day.
6. Most sessions take between four and eight hours, depending on the number of grafts.
Tenderness, tightness and some swelling settle over the first few days, and the dot scabs lift within about 10 to 14 days. Between weeks two and eight, many of the transplanted hairs shed. This is a shocking loss. It is normal, and the follicles beneath remain. New growth usually appears from three to four months, maturing over 12 to 18 months. Temporary numbness or itching is common. Serious problems are uncommon, and every risk is discussed with you before consent. Dr Bonaros then reviews you personally at set milestones.
1. Redness, warmth or discharge is spreading around the donor or recipient area.
2. Pain worsens or fails to settle with the pain relief you were advised to use.
3. You develop a fever or feel generally unwell.
General information only: advice becomes personal at your consultation.

I can wholeheartedly recommend this clinic . From start to finish the staff were courteous, kind, patient, informative and supportive. I am 13 months into my procedure and it has changed my life. I now don’t feel paranoid about my hair anymore, and have lost all self consciousness . Go for a consultation and meet the team. I am in my 50’s and wish this sort of thing had been around when I was younger!Posted on Google![]()

Dr Bonaros is an incredibly talent doctor in his field and has provided me with a wonderful hair transplant result. Finding information and pictures for female hair transplants was really hard. Hair is such a defining part of us all that is not realised until you start to lose your hair. I suffered female pattern balding and hair thinning due to menopause and became very self conscious. I was worried about the treatment (as many on line photos looked so horrific), pain, recovery time, would it work, results etc. I also didn't want to lose more hair over the coming years, but also didn't want to have my head shaved at the back for the transplant. Dr Bonaros answered all my questions and was such a knowledgeable and calming person that I knew he was the doctor for me and I was in safe hands. On the day of the transplant, he and his team were amazing and so very kind and took great care of me. The aftercare and regular check ups were great. I have just celebrated by first hair transplant birthday and the result are fantastic. I have consented for Dr Bonaros to share all of my journey photos with any other women out there contemplating this treatment. I cannot recommend highly enough. My hair is thicker and fuller and I even have a full fringe now.Posted on Google![]()

Can't thank the Dr and the team enough for such great work on my hair. It's been a year and I'm delighted with the results of my 4000 graft procedure. The team were kind, professional and patient during the consultation stage. They answered all my questions and made me feel at ease. During the operation every step was explained and the experience was made as comfortable as possible over the two days of my 4000 graft procedure. It's a morning of extractions from the donor area and an afternoon of inserting them into the recipient area with lunch provided. I brought some in-ear headphones for a podcast to pass the time and it does fly by. Dr Bonaros was present at all times performing the extractions and graft placement. They worked non-stop during this time. The post operation care package you get home and the follow up emails and appointments to ask questions really made the whole post care process easy at what is a sensitive time. Fully recovered and seeing the results, it's gave me a lot of confidence and looking back at old photographs I really do not regret having it done, I wish I did it sooner. Really appreciate what the clinic has done for me. Thank you Dr Bonaros and Team!Posted on Google![]()

Can’t thank dr Bonaros and the team enough, I found them to be extremely professional, reassuring and kind. I work an operating theatre environment so I guess I was a bit of a tough customer however I was very impressed with my hair transplant from first consultation to the operation itself. I’m now 4 months out and have loads of hair growth, my confidence has been renewed massively and my only regret is not having the treatment sooner! Thanks again Kind regards GrahamPosted on Google![]()

I had a 2000 graft hair transplant with Dr Bonaros just over a year ago. It was painless, very easy on my part (I just had to lie in different positions and amuse myself) and Dr Bonaros and his team were super informative and happily answered all of my questions both during our initial consult and the procedure itself. I was seen at 8:50am and we finished up I believe around 4pm, with an hour lunch break (the surgery provided a hot lunch, and were very accommodating with my dietary needs) Aftercare was very well explained and I was given all the necessary equipment and care instructions for my recovery. I had no complications during or after the transplant, and healing with a lot easier than I expected. Patience and time are the main factors for the months after your transplant. I am over the moon with my results, I am so much more confident and my self-esteem has come on in leaps and bounds. Thank you so much for giving me a new lease on life!Posted on Google![]()

Frequently Asked Questions
Yes. Suitability depends on a stable pattern of loss and a donor area healthy enough to supply grafts. An in-person assessment confirms both, whatever stage you have reached on the Ludwig scale (the grading system for female pattern loss). Female pattern hair loss is the most commonly treated condition. Stable traction alopecia (hair loss from tight styling) and some scar-related loss can also respond well.
The local anaesthetic injections bring a brief sting, after which the scalp is numb. Most patients find the procedure itself comfortable. Some aching or tightness in the days afterwards is normal and usually settles with simple pain relief.
Most procedures are completed in a single day, typically between four and eight hours, depending on the number of grafts. Smaller hairline cases sit at the shorter end, and you go home the same day.
Usually not. Many women are treated with a partial shave so that longer hair immediately covers the area. An unshaven FUE option is available for suitable cases. The right approach depends on your hair length and the size of the area being treated, and is agreed at the consultation.
Transplanted follicles retain their resistance to the hormonal signal that underlies pattern loss, so they usually continue growing in the long term. Native hair around them can still thin over time, so your plan may also include protecting existing hair. No clinic can honestly promise a fixed lifetime density.
The aim is a result nobody questions: a soft, slightly irregular hairline built from single-hair grafts, angled to blend with your existing hair. The tiny donor dot marks are usually hidden by surrounding hair once healed, and you can style your hair normally after recovery.
After your examination, you receive a fixed written quote for your specific plan that sets out exactly what it includes. Grafts typically cost around £4 each, though case complexity can affect the final total. Your quote covers your surgeon-performed procedure, the number of grafts planned, and your aftercare and follow-up reviews. There is no obligation to book, and nothing is added later.

Then surgery may not be the answer, which is exactly why assessment comes first. Thinning linked to menopause, thyroid or iron issues, or tight styling may need a different approach. You would be guided to the right tests through your GP. A transplant is only planned once the diagnosis and pattern are stable. You can read more in our guide to female pattern hair loss.
Age by itself is not a barrier. What matters is the stability of your hair loss, the strength of your donor area and your general health. Many of the women treated at the clinic are in their 40s, 50s and 60s
Apply the same checks wherever you go. Confirm the surgeon on the GMC online register and meet them before you commit. Ask to see the healed 12-month results of female patients, and ask who performs each stage of the surgery. In Scotland, independent clinics are regulated by Healthcare Improvement Scotland, and being close to your surgeon matters if you need aftercare.
Yes. Minoxidil is an established option for female pattern hair loss, and prescription treatment may be appropriate for some women after specialist assessment. Some patients combine medical treatment with surgery to protect existing hair. What suits you depends on your diagnosis and is discussed openly at the consultation.
