PRP Treatment for Hair Loss

The PRP treatment uses a small blood sample, usually your own blood. The sample is processed and then injected into your scalp to help with healthier, thicker new hair growth.

Traditionally used for musculoskeletal issues, PRP is a newer off-label hair loss treatment supported by multiple clinical studies. PRP therapy is most commonly used to treat female and male pattern hair loss (also known as androgenetic alopecia) and alopecia areata.

Thinning hair and hair loss are common issues that affect millions of people worldwide.  These conditions can affect a person’s appearance, often impacting their self-esteem and quality of life. Fortunately, there are numerous surgical and non-surgical treatment options available to combat balding, including PRP injections.

How PRP Hair Treatments Work

PRP for hair loss has been shown to effectively combat thinning hair and balding. While its exact mechanism of action remains unknown, several biological processes are believed to contribute to its effectiveness.

Your blood contains:

  1. White and red blood cells

  2. Plasma

  3. Platelets, which are rich in growth factors that help the body tissue regeneration and natural healing.

Platelet-rich plasma is a concentrated form of platelets, usually 5 times higher than regular blood

During a plasma hair treatment, PRP is injected into your scalp at the hair follicle level. This can help:

  • Increase blood supply to the hair
  • Strengthen existing miniaturised follicles
  • Stimulate natural hair growth
  • Increase hair thickness
  • Reduce premature shedding

The PRP Therapy Procedure

Getting a PRP injection is a relatively simple procedure:

  1. Your hair loss specialist will begin by collecting platelet-rich plasma for your hair loss treatment. This is done by drawing a small quantity of blood, typically between 10 and 20 ml (usually from the veins in your arm).

  2. A centrifuge machine separates the blood into 3 layers: platelet-rich and platelet-poor plasma, and red cells.

  3. The PRP (platelet-rich plasma) is then extracted and injected deep into areas of your scalp where you are experiencing hair thinning or balding.

This process is usually repeated over a few months to help strengthen hair follicles and achieve the desired hair density.

Plasma treatment for hair loss is not permanent, and to maintain results, many patients have follow-up sessions every 3 to 6 months.

Patient Testimonials

Efficacy of PRP Hair Therapy

While results differ, most patients notice:

  • Gradual improvements in hair thickness and quality

  • Reduced hair shedding

  • Healthier overall hair cycle

  • Benefits that build over time, with duration depending on individual response and maintenance treatments

It’s important to note that the efficacy of PRP treatments can vary between patients. If effective, PRP therapy can encourage hair follicle growth and result in a thicker, fuller head of hair. However, this is not always the case.

The effects of PRP treatments for hair thinning and loss are dependent on:

  • Platelet concentration and density: The various PRP kits have different densities of platelets that will affect the success of the therapy.

  • Centrifuge technology: The type of centrifuge used to isolate the PRP is pivotal, as different devices can separate the platelets and other blood cells at varying concentrations.

  • Viability of hair follicles: PRP strengthens existing follicles and may help stimulate inactive but still living follicles.

  • Combination treatment plan: To enhance your results, your doctor may recommend a combined treatment plan. Studies suggest that combining PRP therapy with other hair loss medications like minoxidil can increase the efficacy of your treatment.

PRP Treatment Protocol

We utilise two different PRP kits, Cellenis and Onset. This ensures we can meet all patient needs with superior-quality, safe treatments.

  • The recommended course is three sessions spaced 4-6 weeks apart

  • After the initial phase, we recommend one session every 4-6 months to maintain the results.

Each session lasts around 1 hour.
